Dedicated Server Software Configuration

Dedicated Server Buyer's Guide : Dedicated Server Software Configuration

There's a lot more to a dedicated server than just hardware and an operating system. Like, for example, the web serving software! Other essential software includes databases, control panels, anti-intrusion and firewalling routines.

Since most dedicated servers are used for serving web content, one important piece of software that's often installed is a control panel. Control panels are often used to make it easier for administrators, resellers and end-users to configure and maintain their servers easily and securely. Common control panels include CPanel, DirectAdmin and Webmin. Some providers will install an add-on to their control panels which allows users to easily install commonly used web-based software to their accounts. Fantastico (for cpanel) and installatron (for directadmin) are two examples.

Databases are used for storing information, and are essential for sites that need to store information. The type of information can vary widely, but databases are often used to store product data, user information and user forum content. The database most commonly found in a webserver is MySQL, because its licensing often allows it to be used for free.
